Ellie Goulding Debuts Atop U.K. Albums Chart
March 08, 2010 - Global | Retail | Rock and Pop

By Paul Sexton, London

Critics' Choice BRIT Award winner Ellie Goulding made a winning start to her U.K. album chart career, debuting at No. 1 with her first set, "Lights" (Polydor/Universal). South London rapper Tinie Tempah made a similarly triumphant first appearance in the singles chart, opening at the top with "Pass Out" (Parlophone/EMI).

Twenty-three year-old Goulding's selection for the critical award, in which her predecessors were Adele in 2008 and Florence and the Machine last year, was followed by a No. 4 debut single last week, "Starry Eyed." That track held there on the March 7 charts as her first album relegated Lady Gaga's "The Fame" (Interscope/Universal) to No. 2.

Other highlights of the new album chart included a No. 8 debut for Jason Derulo's self-titled Warner Bros. set, which features last week's U.K. No. 1 single "In My Head." That track fell to No. 3 as Rihanna's "Rude Boy" (Def Jam/Universal) climbed 3-2, with her "Rated R" album improving 16-9. Actor and easy listening entertainer John Barrowman's eponymous Sony Music album opened at No. 11, and Sharleen Spiteri, from Scottish pop-rock band Texas, at No. 13 with her second solo release, "The Movie Songbook" (Mercury/Universal).

Tinie Tempah's chart-topping arrival on the singles survey comes after "Pass Out" received extensive play on national pop network BBC Radio 1, including a spot on the A-list of the station's weekly playlist. There were two other new entries in the singles top ten: "Never Be Your Woman" (Relentless/Virgin/EMI) by British rapper-producer Wiley featuring Emeli at No. 8, and reformed boy band Boyzone's "Gave It All Away" (Polydor/Universal) at No. 9.

Billboard's current pan-European sales charts show Sade in a third week atop European Albums with "Soldier of Love" (Epic/Sony Music Entertainment), while Ke$ha's "Tik Tok" (RCA/Sony Music Entertainment) is a fifth week at No. 1 on Hot 100 Singles.
