Max Hole To Fill UMGI Leadership Role
March 15, 2010 - Global

By Andre Paine, London

Max Hole has been promoted to COO of Universal Music Group International (UMGI), following the confirmation last month that Lucian Grainge will become UMG's CEO.

Hole's new London-based role takes effect from July 1. He will report to Grainge, currently UMGI Chairman/CEO, who will maintain operational responsibility for the U.K. and French businesses when he heads up UMG.

UMGI is the division that manages UMG's businesses in more than 50 countries outside North America.

Grainge will re-locate to New York and serve as co-CEO with Doug Morris from July 1 and then take over from Jan. 1, 2011. Morris, who has served as chairman and CEO of UMG since November 1995, will remain as chairman.

Hole is currently EVP, UMGI, and president of the company's Asia Pacific region. He will assume responsibility for UMGI's central functions at its headquarters in London, and for the operations of UMGI territories and regions worldwide.

David Joseph, Chairman/CEO, Universal Music U.K., and Pascal Negre, President, Universal Music France, and President, Mediterranean, South America and Middle East, will continue to report to Grainge. All other executives responsible for UMGI central functions and territories will report to Hole.

"No one is better suited to lead UMGI than Max Hole," said Grainge in a statement. "He's been an independent artist manager, record producer, A&R head, company managing director and, since 1998, one of Universal Music's most senior, accomplished executives. We first met in this business 30 years ago, so I'm delighted and gratified that we'll continue to work together, focusing on breaking artists, driving our digital music business with innovation and imagination, and delivering success."

Max Hole added: "I have spent the last 12 years at Universal Music and am very happy to have played my part in helping Lucian build UMGI into what it is today. We work closely and understand each other. I am very excited at the prospect of continuing our partnership to build opportunities for our artists, for music fans and for our company."

Hole joined UMGI as SVP, marketing and A&R, in 1998, and was promoted to EVP in 2004. He later added responsibility for UMGI's digital, strategic marketing and commercial affairs divisions, and for Asia Pacific and Nordic/Central & Eastern Europe.
